Mumbai: Until now, trimming trees on private properties was solely the owner's responsibility. However, the BMC has now decided to prune hazardous trees in private premises or societies free of cost as a social responsibility.
At the same time, it has clarified that it will not be liable for any future accidents caused by such trees. The decision came after two tragic deaths due to tree collapsed in just four days.
Contractual labourers appointed by the BMC’s Garden Department handle tree trimming along Mumbai’s roads. Tree maintenance within housing societies, government or semi-government premises, and private properties remains the responsibility of respective owners or occupants.
However, delays in pruning hazardous trees have led to casualties during the monsoon due to tree collapses. Mumbai Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar recently met Muncipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and urged him to prune hazardous overhanging branches on private properties free of cost.
On Wednesday, the Garden Department issued a circular stating "Dangerous trees in public spaces, roads, parks, societies, and private properties will be surveyed by the civic officials. Property owners will receive written notices regarding hazardous trees on their premises. If no action is taken within the given time, the BMC will intervene and carry out the necessary work as part of its social responsibility."
