Mumbai: The BMC has expanded its waste management services by launching the collection of pet waste and other special waste from Saturday. A dedicated e-waste collection service will also be rolled out from Monday. As part of this initiative, the civic body will collect a variety of e-waste items, including old mobile phones, chargers, batteries, computers, televisions, and small electronic devices for safe disposal.

Last week, the BMC launched a dedicated collection service for domestic sanitary and special care waste to promote safer and more hygienic disposal of personal-use items. Till May 3, around 444 housing societies and establishments have registered for the initiative, including 239 residential complexes, 174 beauty parlours, 24 educational institutions, and eight women’s hostels. Starting next week, BMC will begin sending vehicles to these locations for waste collection.

"Toxic elements like lead, mercury, and cadmium present in e-waste can cause serious harm to both the environment and public health when mixed with regular garbage. Our dedicated e-waste collection service will ensure safe, convenient, and eco-friendly disposal of discarded electronic items," said Kiran Dighavkar, deputy municipal commissioner (Solid Waste Management).

In addition, the civic body will also launch a public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of responsible e-waste disposal, its environmental impact, and the need for active citizen participation.

Following citizen requests, the BMC has now included pet waste collection and E waste collection under its Special Waste Collection Initiative. An online registration link and QR code had been made available for the service, and the same platform can now be used to register for these waste collection as well.
