The statement was made during the hearing in a suo motu (on its own) Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated by the court regarding the lack of cremation facilities for pet animals in the city.

During an earlier hearing, the court had asked the civic body to respond to concerns over inadequate infrastructure for pet and stray animal cremation.

Mahalaxmi Crematorium 90% Complete, Expected to Start by October

BMC advocate told a bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne that an animal crematorium is already functional at Malad. It further submitted that the Mahalaxmi facility is 90% complete and expected to be operational by October.

The Deonar crematorium, with a 50 kg capacity, is also in progress, pending finalisation of the gas connection. It too is likely to be functional by October 2025.

Satisfied with the assurance, the court noted that the BMC had initiated necessary steps and recorded the expected completion timelines before disposing of the petition.

The suo motu PIL was initiated on June 11 after a May news report stated that work at the Deonar facility had been delayed, affecting animal lovers and residents seeking proper cremation services for pets.
