The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) recently held a meeting with the MMRDA, Traffic Police over the congestion at Dahisar toll naka. Due to the ongoing Metro Line 9 and pillars coming up at the toll naka, the FASTag installation work has been delayed. Kamlakar Phand, Chief General Manager (Tolls), MSRDC said, "As temporary measure, the existing booths will be shifted in the periphery area for speedy movement of vehicles. The lanes cannot be converted into complete FASTag until the metro pillar work is completed here."

Daily 4 lakh vehicles from both sides cross the Dahisar Toll Naka. However, as the lockdown is lifted the number of vehicles will increase further, said the official.

At present the Dahisar toll naka structure demolish work is going on. Phand said that it will take two months time as told by the Metro contractor and then only the FASTag lane conversion work can be initiated. Currently, with the available 28 hand guns the FASTag vehicles screening is being done. "This manual screening takes time. For car and small vehicles it is fine but for trucks and big commercial vehicles it becomes time consuming. Until the lanes are converted into FASTag with boom barriers the easy movement of vehicles is not possible. However, by introducing temporary measures we are trying to resolve the issue," said the official.

Meanwhile, MSRDC has also asked space from BMC for Dahisar toll naka augmentation facility. However, the required space is used for COVID-19 makeshift hospital at present so the proposed plan has been stalled for some time, said Phand.

The MSRDC looks after the five city toll plaza--Airoli, Vashi , Mulund , Dahisar and LBS Mulund. While the Bandra-Worli sealink toll plaza has been converted into complete FASTag. The work of five toll Plaza will take more time. Phand said, "Due to Covid-19 prevailing situation the appointed contractor unable to get the machines which are supposed to come from foreign countries like Bangkok. So the installation work at these toll plaza except Dahisar has been affected." Of five city toll plazas, Dahisar and Mulund are the busiest toll plazas as vehicles including commercial usually pass from here in large numbers.

The MSRDC as emphasizing on FASTag lanes at all its toll plazas is also offering monthly toll passes only to FASTag users for easy movement of vehicles and to prevent congestion. The FPJ had reported how MSRDC had given toll exemption to 800 govt. Vehicles in bid reduce queue at Hybrid lanes
