Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani recently held a joint meeting with officials from both the Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR) to review and strengthen preparations for the upcoming monsoon season. During the meeting, he assessed all chronic flooding hotspots across both rail networks. He emphasised the critical need for seamless coordination between the civic authorities and railway officials to ensure that railway services remain unaffected, even in the face of challenges posed by heavy rainfall.

The review meeting held at BMC headquarters was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar, Chief Engineer (Storm Water Drains) Shridhar Chaudhary, and officials from CR and WR. Gagrani instructed officials to ensure efficient removal of silt from drains near railway tracks under BMC jurisdiction to prevent waterlogging and ensure uninterrupted railway services during the monsoon. He also directed joint site inspections by BMC and railway officials for pre-monsoon preparedness at WR and CR stations.

A detailed review was conducted for locations including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Matunga Workshop, Chunabhatti, Wadala Railway Station, the main culvert, Mithi River (Sion-Kurla), Brahmanwadi Nala, Tilak Nagar Nala, Vidyavihar Railway Station (Fatima Nagar), Karve Nagar Nala (Kanjurmarg), Hariyali Nala, Santoshi mata Nala, Marwadi Nala, and Masjid Nala, as well as the Bhandup Railway Station (Crompton Nala, Dattar Nala, Usha Nagar, Bhandup Platform 1). The discussion also covered various pre-monsoon measures to be implemented at key locations such as Andheri and Borivali on the WR.

Gagrani said "The suburban railway stations are crucial to the daily life of Mumbai, and any disruption can bring the city to a halt. Therefore, it is essential to have top-level coordination with the railway administration to prevent waterlogging on railway tracks." A pre-monsoon preparation meeting has been scheduled for February to ensure that the BMC and railway departments can effectively coordinate and carry out direct actions, allowing more than three and a half months for implementation, added an official.
