The Marine Drive police on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old man working as a domestic help at the residence of a doctor on charges of extortion. The police sources claimed that the accused had taken an objectionable photograph on his phone of the doctor's wife and later used the same to blackmail and extort money from her.
The accused has been identified as Sachin Yadav, a native of Jharkhand.
According to the police, Yadav had been working at the doctor's residence since August last year. The complainant's wife had been suffering from an ailment where she experiences physical and sensory problems. On Friday, the complainant received a call from his wife who sounded worried. Upon reaching home, the complainant's wife told him that Yadav had taken her photograph on his phone and had been threatening her for the past few days.
The police stated that in May this year, when the victim was unwell due to her ailment, Yadav took advantage of her condition and took a photograph.
On July 04, Yadav told the woman that he wanted Rs 10,000 to buy a laptop. The victim refused to comply with his demand, but Yadav continued to threaten the victim saying he would make the photograph viral on social media, and share it with her husband. He also threatened to kill the woman and her husband. The woman then sent Rs 10,000 to Yadav through online payment, the police said.
The doctor on Friday lodged a complaint against Yadav on charges of threat and extortion. Later in the day, Yadav was caught by the police near the complainant's residence and seized a laptop and mobile phone from him.
The police are checking if Yadav had stored any photographs in his phone or laptop.
