A 65-year-old man was arrested by the Worli police for allegedly sexually assaulting a 47-year-old mentally-challenged woman. The arrested accused was wanted for more than a month. The police tracked him down to Karnataka.
The police have identified the accused as Abdul Gani Bhagwan (65). He used to live on a footpath in Worli. The police said that the incident was reported in the last week of April. The accused had allegedly touched the woman inappropriately. He also tried to rape her.
“Locals reached out to the victim’s aid and before they could catch hold of the accused, he fled from the spot,” a police official said.
Under the guidance of Anil Koli, senior police inspector, Worli police station started the investigation. For almost a month the team, comprising Vishwas Dhumal, police sub-inspector including police constable Sandeep Bugade, Alankar Jadhav, were tracing the accused.
“With the help of sources, the cop managed to track down his whereabouts. A team reached Karnataka and arrested him,” said a police officer.
The Worli police have registered a case under Sections 354 and 354(b) of the Indian penal code. "We arrested the accused on June 13. He was produced before a court and has been sent to cop custody,” said a police officer.
