Mumbai: Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), one of the major railway terminus of the city, is gearing up to unveil a unique dining experience for passengers. An old train coach is currently being transformed into a restaurant-on-wheels which can accommodate 40 patrons. The rake has been strategically positioned on the newly-laid tracks adjacent to the LTT. A senior railway official confirmed the news, saying, “The work to convert an old coach into a restaurant-on-wheels is in advanced stage. Our target is to inaugurate this facility on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.”

Interestingly, the initiative is not limited to LTT as the railway authorities are working on a similar project at the Dadar station, with its completion expected by January 2024. The primary focus is on identifying stations that are either tourist destinations or witness high footfall. A Central Railway official said, “The passenger-friendly initiative is also an innovative revenue generation idea. Several locations like Kalyan, Lonavala, Neral, Igatpuri, Dadar, and Matheran in the Mumbai Division have been identified for this purpose.”

In 2021, a similar facility was introduced at CSMT and it quickly gained popularity. The maiden 'restaurant-on-wheels' in Mumbai had to be closed as it was not in line with the station's redevelopment.
