Mumbai: Central Railway has officially launched Mumbai’s first senior citizen coach in the city’s local train network. This dedicated coach, now part of the EMU rake, comes with enhanced seating, improved aesthetics, and safety features designed specifically for senior citizens.
The first journey took place today, July 10, 2025, with the 3:45 PM CSMT–Dombivli local train, offering improved comfort and convenience for elderly passengers.
The Central Railway shared this update on X (formerly Twitter), along with pictures of the newly introduced coach reserved for senior citizens. The initiative is aimed at providing a more comfortable and respectful travel experience for older commuters on Mumbai’s rail network.
About Senior Citizen Coach
The renovation was done by the Matunga Workshop as per the Railway Board’s instructions to make public transport more inclusive and comfortable for commuters. The new senior citizen coach was created by converting the middle luggage section of the sixth coach from the Mumbai end of the train.
To make travel easier for elderly passengers, especially during rush hours, the coach has 13 ergonomically designed seats for better access and comfort. Stainless steel tube partitions have been added to improve visibility and allow smoother movement. These are further equipped with sight-level panels and integrated grab poles for added support.
The added safety features consist of knurled vertical grab poles located near the doorways and emergency ladders positioned beneath both doors to ensure quick evacuation if necessary. Additionally, vinyl-wrapped interiors enhance the aesthetics, creating a cleaner and more inviting environment
“This prototype is a significant move towards inclusive mobility,” said a Central Railway spokesperson. “It addresses the long-pending concerns of senior citizens and reinforces our focus on passenger-centric infrastructure.”
