Mumbai: After a brief halt, the trial against Chetan Singh Chaudhary, accused of killing four people on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express in July 2023, has resumed since Monday.

On July 31, 2023, Chaudhary shot three passengers and his superior on board the moving Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station. He was nabbed with his weapon later while trying to flee after passengers pulled the chain of the train which stopped near Mira Road station.

Trial Resumes After Five-Month Pause Over Mental Health

The trial was put on hold since February as Chaudhary's mental condition was said to be deteriorating. After treatment at Thane hospital, the mental health review board (MHRB), Thane, had last month informed the court that he was fit now.

RPF Constable Testifies, Says Victim Begged for Mercy

On Monday, as the trial was to resume, Chaudhary was brought to court. The prosecution examined the sixth witness in the trial, Narendra Parmar, a dismissed constable attached to Railway Police Force. He narrated the sequence of events.

Parmar said he followed Chaudhary to coach S6, and said that everyone was scared of him. Parmar had seen Chaudhary shoot Asghar Shaikh in coach S6. Parmar claimed that Shaikh was begging for mercy. However, Parmar said Chaudhary fired two bullets at him, and killed him.

Witness Says 'Everyone Was Scared,' Tried to Stop Accused

The witness further said that Chaudhary was in no condition to listen to anyone. “I tried to make him understand but there were many passengers between us. I was scared that he would kill more passengers if I stopped him. Hence I was trying to convince him,” Parmar said, adding that he was scared that Chaudhary would kill him too.
