Mumbai: A 41-year-old married woman from Mazgaon has allegedly been cheated out of ₹3.4 lakh by a cyber fraudster who posed as an NRI hotel businessman on Facebook. The accused, using a fake profile under the name Sahil Jaggal, reportedly befriended the woman online and lured her with false promises of marriage.

According to the FIR, the victim, a resident of Hathibaug in Mazgaon, came in contact with the accused around three months ago through Facebook. Presenting himself as a resident of Gurugram, Haryana, currently living in France and running a hotel business there, the man initiated a friendly relationship with the woman, on Facebook.

Their conversation soon shifted from Facebook to WhatsApp, where they communicated regularly through messages, audio, and video calls. Gaining her trust, the accused told the woman on April 13 that his ATM card had been blocked and requested financial help. She transferred ₹10,000 to him.

Over the course of the next few weeks, he continued to request money under various pretexts, assuring her of marriage and a future together. By May 31, he allegedly extracted a total of ₹3.4 lakh from the woman, promising marriage as a motive to gain her trust.

Realizing she had been deceived, the woman approached the Byculla Police, who have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bhartiy Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act and the Information Technology Act.
