Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has undertaken two flyover projects to decongest the Chedda Nagar junction, and make it signal-free. The junction is one of the most important ones in the city as vehicles headed towards Ghatkopar from Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Eastern Freeway and south Mumbai pass through this point.
However, the usual traffic bottlenecks severely hamper the travel time between south Mumbai and Mankhurd, which is hardly a few minutes drive. During peak hours, the traffic moves at snail pace, hence the commuters had to wait for long even to reach a short destination.
To resolve the issue, the MMRDA has planned to construct two flyovers; one from Mankurd to Thane and the other from Sion to Thane.
So far, 71 per cent work of the two-lane Mankhurd flyover—which is 1,235 m long and 8.5 m wide--has been completed. Once it’s ready, the travel time between freeway, Chembur, Mankhurd and Navi Mumbai will come down to 20-25 minutes.
Meanwhile, 21 per cent of work of the three-lane Sion flyover—which is 680 m long and 12 m wide—has been completed.
Both the projects are aimed at providing seamless travelling experience to commuters, underlined the MMRDA.
