Mumbai: A fire broke out early this morning at Pann Ali Mansion, a 12-storey residential building located on Issaji Street, Vadgadi, near Ram Mandir in Mumbai's Masjid Bandar. The incident was reported at 6:11 am by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), with emergency responders arriving promptly.
The fire was confined to electric wiring and installations in the common meter box and passage on the ground floor. Despite being swiftly extinguished by 6:31 am, heavy smoke spread through the building, causing severe suffocation to several residents. Visuals of the blaze have surfaced on the internet.
2 Woman Killed In Fire Mishap
Tragically, two women lost their lives due to the smoke. Dr Yagnik, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at J J Hospital, confirmed the deaths of Sajiya Alam Shaikh, 30, and Sabila Khatun Shaikh, 42, who also sustained burn injuries. Both victims were declared brought dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Among the injured, three residents were hospitalised due to smoke inhalation. Shahin Shaikh, 22, was admitted to J J Hospital, where her condition remains stable. Karim Shaikh, 20, was taken to G T Hospital and his condition is also reported as stable. Emergency responders, including MFB, police, and BEST staff, worked swiftly to evacuate residents.
The fire’s impact was most severe on the first, sixth and eighth floors, where victims suffered from smoke suffocation. Two women on the first floor sustained burns and breathing difficulties. They were transported to J J Hospital in a police mobile van. A male resident on the sixth floor suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to J J Hospital in a private vehicle. Another female resident on the eighth floor also suffocated and was shifted to J J Hospital in a private ambulance.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest an electrical short circuit in the meter box. Authorities have launched an investigation into the safety compliance of the building.
