Mumbai: A fire broke out in Andheri's Marol due to a gas pipeline leakage on Sunday in the early hours, resulting in severe damage to a car, an autorickshaw and a motorcycle. Three people sustained burn injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby trauma center for treatment.
According to Mumbai Fire Brigade’s Additional Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO) S.K. Sawant, the fire department received an alert at around 12:30 AM. “The incident occurred at a location where construction work by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was underway. Initial reports indicate that three people suffered burns and have been hospitalised,” he said.
Details Of The Fire
The fire erupted near Sher-e-Punjab Junction around midnight when a JCB machine accidentally damaged a major gas pipeline during road construction. The rupture led to a massive gas leak, igniting flames that engulfed three vehicles passing by.
Two fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene, and firefighters managed to control the blaze within 30 minutes. The injured have been identified as Arvind Kumar Kaithal (21), who sustained 30-40 per cent burns, Aman Harishankar Saroj (22), with 40-50 per cent burns, and Suresh Kailas Gupta (52), an autorickshaw driver, who suffered 20 per cent burns. The MIDC police have registered a case against the roadwork contractor and launched an investigation into the incident.
Past Incidents of Gas Pipeline Fires
This is not the first time Mumbai has witnessed such an incident. In May 2024, a similar fire broke out in Juhu due to a gas pipeline leak near the Oceanus Building, affecting several shops. The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) team managed to stop the leakage and extinguish the fire. Four people were injured in that incident.
