Mumbai: A father and son were mowed down by a truck in Ghatkopar (E) on Thursday afternoon. The father, Mohammed Jameel Bashir Sayyed (30), and his son, Mohammed Raza Jameel Sayyed (7), were on their way home on a scooter when they were run over by a truck from behind. Pant Nagar police have booked and arrested the driver of the truck for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.

Jameel and Raza, both residents of Ghatkopar (W), were on their way home from the eastern parts, where Raza’s school is situated. “On Thursday afternoon, at around 3.30 pm, Jameel had come to collect his son. Near Laxmi Nagar, the scooter lost balance and they fell to the ground. A truck, driven by Satyabhan Laxman Jaiswal (48), which was coming from behind, loaded with cement, ran over them. Jaiswal tried to flee from the spot, but was nabbed by the locals, said a police officer from Pant Nagar police station.

Later, the residents blocked the road, staged a ‘rasta-roko’ and demanded strict action from the authorities as the area is notorious for similar accidents in the past. The residents alleged that many vehicles, especially two wheelers, tend to skid due to irregularities in the road.

The Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road witnessed traffic snarls due to the rasta roko and commuters were asked to use alternative routes to reach their destinations. The protestors were dispersed by the police officials and the unhindered flow of traffic was restored.
