The officers of the Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) have apprehended a staffer of BMC for allegedly demanding a bribe from a person in order to make corrections of the name in the complainant's birth certificate.

The accused public servant has been identified as Arjun Nishad (3), a Class III official posted at the Health Department of the BMC's E-Ward at Byculla.

According to the ACB, the complainant wanted a copy of his birth certificate for some reason and he had applied for the same in August 2024. In November last year, the complainant had received the original copy of his birth certificate from the BMC's E-Ward office. When the complainant inspected the original copy, it was found that the complainant's name and his mother's name were wrong.

At that time, when the complainant pointed out the said mistake to the E-Ward official, the official concerned asked the complainant to file a new application, after which the complainant submitted a new application on 09/01/2025. Then on 20/02/2025, when the complainant met Arjun Nishad, a staffer at E-Ward, he allegedly demanded a bribe from the complainant saying that he would have to pay Rs 4000 to get the work done.

As the complainant did not want to pay a bribe he approached the ACB office and filed a complaint. Accordingly, on Thursday, it was found that the accused public servant had demanded a bribe of Rs 4000 from the complainant and the settled the amount for Rs 3500 and then to Rs 2000 after further negotiations. Accordingly, during the entrapment operation, the public servant was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 2000 from the complainant.

The ACB has registered a case against Arjun Nishad under the relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
