A special court designated under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail application of a police sub-inspector in a complaint of rape on promise of marriage, cheating and unnatural intercourse filed against him by a woman sub-inspector.
The court reasoned that allegations against the policeman are serious and there are also allegations under the SC/ST Act. The cop’s advocate had denied allegations of rape and said that the duo’s relations were consensual and that they had parted ways in 2018 due to differences.
Additional Public Prosecutor Sumesh Panjwani had opposed grant of the relief to him and told the court that he being a policeman, could influence witnesses whose statements were yet to be recorded.
The duo had developed a relationship when they were deputed together as probationary officers and lived in the same police quarters. In her complaint at the Dongri police station, the 30-year-old said that on the promise of marriage, the man had kept physical relations with her since early 2014.
Thereafter, when their colleagues at the police came to know of their relationship and he would make excuses when asked to marry her, she had shifted to another city through a transfer. The man had continued visiting her there and kept physical relations. She also alleged that he forced her to go nude on video calls and recorded them, with the threat to not marry her if she does not do as he says.
This year, she learnt that his marriage was fixed, but he continued to deny this. In April, he met her and again established physical relations with her. She came to know a few days later from his police station that he had married someone in mid-March. She mentioned an instance in her complaint where he had made casteist remarks on her. When she visited his native after she learnt about his wedding, his mother and brother made casteist remarks and humiliated her again.
