Mumbai Construction Sites Must Install Air Quality Sensors As BMC Floats EOI For Low-Cost Air Pollution Measuring Devices

To ensure all construction sites in Mumbai deploy air quality sensors, the BMC's environment department has floated Expression of Interest (EOI) to decide the technology for sensor based low cost air pollution measuring devices. The devices will measure the PM 2.5 and PM 10 pollutants in the air which are maximum found at the construction sites.

Mumbai: To ensure all construction sites in Mumbai deploy air quality sensors, the BMC's environment department has floated Expression of Interest (EOI) to decide the technology for sensor based low cost air pollution measuring devices. The devices will measure the PM 2.5 and PM 10 pollutants in the air which are maximum found at the construction sites.

As per a BMC data, there are around 2000 ongoing construction sites in Mumbai under the BMC jurisdiction, of which not more than 40 percent sites have air quality sensors installed. As per guidelines by the BMC while issuing permissions for the construction activities, it is mandatory for the builder, developer or contractor to install an quality sensors near the site.

"The objective of the EOI is to lay a standardized procedure and technology for the builders, developers and contractors to procure and deploy low cost air quality sensors at their construction sites. After an meeting with expert committee, it was decided to float tender for EOI. We aim to shortlist 10 companies which can provide low cost air quality sensors," a senior officer from BMC's environment department said.

The action is taken after the Bombay High court slammed the BMC last month for casual approach towards curbing air pollution in Mumbai. The HC also directed BMC to ensure all construction sites in the city has air quality sensors installed.

The dust generated through the construction activities in the city, is the major source of air pollution in Mumbai. The other major sources includes bakeries and industries.
