Mumbai: To stop decline in student enrolment in civic-run schools, the BMC has passed a proposal to give these students priority when it comes to jobs at the corporation. The proposal was passed in the House and is awaiting clearance from Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
“The move is to attract declining number of students in municipal schools and help them get better opportunities in the corporation”, said Mangesh Satamkar, Shiv Sena corporator and head of the education committee in the BMC. He was certain such a move would encourage more parents to enrol their students to municipal schools. Already, civic schools offer facilities such as free school buses, mid-day meals, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
“Not only would this move attract the fall in number of students in attendance, but bring the outliers into the mainstream,” said Satamkar. In its 2018-19 budget, the BMC allotted good amount for education and 59 new civic run schools were proposed for this year. It has also proposed 35 new schools affiliated to CBSE and other boards (IB, IGCSE, ICSE), under a public private partnership system.
