Mumbai, August 7, 2026: The BMC Standing Committee has decided to hold a special meeting to frame a policy for the redevelopment of the city’s stalled municipal markets after members raised concerns over the poor condition of ageing market infrastructure.
The 46-year-old Savarkar Market in Dadar has been classified as a C-2B category structure in a structural audit, requiring major repairs estimated at Rs 2.46 crore. The repair proposal was recently approved by the BMC Standing Committee.
Committee Raises Redevelopment Concerns
During the discussion, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) group leader Yashwant Killedar said that while redevelopment of the market is essential, immediate repair works should be undertaken as the redevelopment of Krantisinh Nana Patil Market is already in progress and no alternative arrangement is available for traders.
He also suggested that any additional works proposed for Savarkar Market should be submitted through a separate proposal.
Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde questioned the fate of earlier proposals for the redevelopment of nearly 20 municipal markets, stating that the delay had deprived markets of essential facilities such as parking spaces and cold storage.
“Today, the condition of most municipal markets is poor and immediate repairs are necessary. However, a long-term approach is needed to develop reserved market plots,” he said.

Special Meeting To Frame Policy
Shinde said the upcoming special meeting would discuss a comprehensive strategy for market redevelopment, including commercial utilisation, participation of agencies, and ways to generate additional revenue for the BMC.
He added that, as suggested by Leader of the House Ganesh Khankar, the civic body may consider appointing consultants to prepare redevelopment plans and explore revenue-generation models.
