Mumbai, August 21, 2026: Mumbai’s coastline is choking under waste, untreated sewage, plastic pollution and encroachments, threatening marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of the traditional Koli community.
In a rare cross-party move, the BMC General Body on Friday unanimously passed a Notice of Motion seeking a dedicated 'Coastal Committee' to tackle marine pollution, protect Koliwadas and biodiversity, and ensure sustainable coastal development.
Proposed Coastal Committee
BJP corporator Yogita Koli, who moved the motion, said the proposed committee should oversee marine pollution control, beach cleanliness and beautification, marine biodiversity conservation, Koliwada infrastructure, sustainable coastal tourism and prevention of encroachments and environmental degradation.
Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Ankit Prabhu suggested that the BMC study coastal management models adopted by other cities and incorporate their best practices. His party colleague Chintamani Nivate alleged that waste cleared from Juhu beach was being dumped at Khar Danda, turning the area into a dumping ground, and demanded its immediate clean-up.
Waste Threatens Fishermen
Former Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Vishakha Raut flagged the flow of waste from the Mithi River into Dadar Chowpatty and demanded the installation of a trash boom to intercept floating garbage before it reaches the sea.
Corporators also called for regular cleaning of Madh, Aksa and other beaches, highlighting the impact of marine waste on fishermen. They said garbage is increasingly being found mixed with fish in their catches, affecting both livelihoods and the marine ecosystem.
