Mumbai: Officers of the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB) of the Airport Special Cargo of Mumbai Customs on Wednesday arrested a Borivali resident for allegedly importing MDMA drugs through an import parcel.

According to the Customs sources, on February 20, 2024, based on specific intelligence, an import parcel having a Borivali address was examined, resulting in the recovery of 972 grams of MDMA.

A controlled delivery in respect of the said parcel was attempted by a team of SIIB officers at the Borivali address on February 27, 2024. However, the delivery could not be completed as the person who resided at the said address refused to accept the parcel, stating that he had not ordered it and that the parcel did not belong to him.

During the investigation, the SIIB officers suspected that IR Memon, son of the person who refused to accept the parcel, might have used his father’s name to book the said parcel, as he was previously involved in a case related to the possession of 700 grams of Ganja (Marijuana).

“Later, Memon’s statement was recorded and he knowledge about the parcel, revealing that he had provided details of his father to his Nigerian friend Ekene Eze. Memon said that a friend of Eze was expected to send MDMA concealed in garments and a phone. He was told that he would be given a handsome money for aiding in this work,” said a Customs official.

“Investigation in the case is at a very preliminary stage, and efforts are being made to apprehend other associates of the accused. The complete nexus of the persons involved in crime is to be revealed,” the official added.

Advocate Birendra Yadav argued for Memon in the court, following which Memon was granted judicial custody by the court.
