Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML) on Wednesday issued a statement saying that it will disconnect power supply of around 700 customers of Siddharth Colony in Chembur over non-payment of bills for last two years worth Rs 2.5 crore. AEML provides electricity supply to nearly 3,250 customers in this colony alone.

The spokesperson said, "We have initiated disconnection action against those consumers only who have failed to pay their electricity bill since June 2019. Multiple notices were issued. The continued payment default by them is resulting in undue tariff burden on our other paying consumers. Therefore, we are constrained to disconnect power supply of defaulting consumers."

AEML is empowered to disconnect power supply of defaulters under section 56 (1) of Electricity Act, 2003.

In July 2019, AEML had initiated mass disconnection action following non-payment of electricity bills by these residents. However, based on the assurance that they would clear their monthly bills, the disconnection drive was put on hold, the office stated.
