Mumbai: The discovery of a 60-year-old woman’s body in a room at the five-star Trident Hotel in Mumbai has caused a stir. The woman, identified as Vinati Makarani, had been staying alone at the hotel since January 6.
Police investigations reveal she was suffering from schizophrenia. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Dr. Pravin Mundhe confirmed that no suspicious items or signs of foul play were found in the room.
Marine Drive police have registered a case of accidental death, and the body has been sent to St. George Hospital for postmortem examination. Vinati Makarani, a resident of Peddar Road in South Mumbai, was unmarried. Her only sibling, a brother, resides abroad. Sources indicate that she owned ancestral property in South Mumbai and preferred living in solitude.
Makarani checked into Trident Hotel on January 6, booking the room independently. On January 19, hotel staff became suspicious when no food orders were placed throughout the day. Alerted by this unusual behavior, senior management was informed, and upon checking her room, they found her lifeless body.
The hotel staff immediately contacted the Marine Drive police, who took custody of the body and began an investigation. The hotel bill amounted to approximately ₹2 lakh for her stay. DCP Munde reiterated that there was no evidence of foul play.
Police sources stated that Makarani had been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia. Her brother has been notified, and his statement is being recorded. It was also revealed that she had previously stayed at the Taj Hotel in December. Further investigations are underway.
