Five persons died after a lift in an under-construction building at Worli collapsed on Saturday evening. The construction site is managed by Ambika Builders, near BDD Chawl.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), four of the deceased have been identified as Avinash Das (35), Laxman Mandal (35), Bharat Mandal (28) and Chinmay Mandal (33). As per the BMC, the unidentified deceased is a 45-year-old man. All five were rushed to KEM and Nair hospital. Laxman Mandal succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the others were declared dead on arrival.

According to Sharad Ughade, the assistant municipal commissioner for G-South ward, the deceased were labourers at the construction site. He said a portion of the makeshift lift at the 18-storeyed building collapsed on top of the victims.

A senior fire brigade official said the labourers were from West Bengal and Bihar. Their family members have been contacted. “It could be possible that Bharat, Laxman and Chinmay were brothers,” a civic official said.
