Around 39 women inmates and six children lodged in Byculla jail were tested positive for Covid recently. Sources from the Maharashtra prison said that all these women either had comorbidities or were pregnant and used to visit JJ hospital for check-ups and treatment. They used to also visit the court for their hearing. These could be the reasons why they got infected.

Currently, the prison houses 312 women and 10 children. On September 18-19, one of the women and a few kids got fever. “They had visited JJ hospital for a check-up. An RT-PCR test was then done, in which they were tested positive. As precautionary step, we carried out a test for 120 inmates, of which 39 women and six kids tested positive,” said a police official. They have been quarantined at E. Patanwala Urdu school in Byculla.
