Mumbai: A 27-year-old man was killed on Thursday morning after allegedly falling from a local train while attempting to deboard from the wrong side. The neck of the deceased, Dhila Rajesh Hamira, got entangled in the railway divider fencing near platform 4 of the Mumbai Central station.
Around 10am, Hamira was found hanging from the iron fencing situated between the up fast line and the suburban train avoidance (STA) line. Eyewitnesses travelling in the same coach reported that Hamira attempted to disembark from the moving train from the wrong side. His neck got caught in the iron spikes of the divider, resulting in severe injuries. He was found dead at the site.
The Railway Police and station authorities were immediately informed. An ambulance arrived at the location by 10.14 am and Hamira was sent to Nair Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
“The deceased worked at a tailoring shop in Pydhonie and resided in Jogeshwari East. The fatal mishap occurred while he was travelling to his workplace,” said an official of the Government Railway Police (GRP). His native place was Gujarat and he was unmarried. After the post-mortem, the police handed over the body to his family, the official added.
The GRP has registered an accidental death report. According to sources, authorities are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including why the passenger attempted to exit from the non-platform side.
Western Railways urges commuters to follow the rules and avoid deboarding from the wrong side or a moving train, as it could be fatal. All safety rules must be followed by the passengers.
