In a significant move aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots, the local unit of the Indian National Congress appointed Vikas Mhatre as the party’s working president of the Mira Bhayandar district committee on Wednesday.

The appointment letter was handed over by state Congress president Nana Patole in the presence of former legislator Muzaffar Hussain and president of the local unit Pramod Samant.

Belonging to a family of die-hard Congress party loyalists, Vikas Mhatre had been serving as block president of the Congress unit in the twin-city. His father Tulsidas Mhatre, who had successfully served as the Mayor of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), was a respected name not only within the Congress party but in the entire political fraternity.

“I am thankful to my seniors for giving me this opportunity. As working president I will try to further strengthen the party while assuring all round development of the twin-city,” said Mhatre.

Notably, elections to the 95-member Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is scheduled to be held next year.
