Mira Bhayandar: The Mira Road police are on the lookout for an imposter who duped a jewellery shop owner by purchasing a gold ring and walking away by showing a fake online payment confirmation message.
According to the police, the incident has been reported from Sai Siddhi Jewellers- a gold ornament showroom located near the Jangid Circle area of Mira Road (east) on Tuesday.
Posing as a customer, the imposter entered the showroom at around 5:30 pm and asked to show gold rings for himself. He selected a gold ring worth more than Rs 51,000. When the person at the sales counter gave him the bill, the imposter scanned the Quick Response (QR) code and showed her the confirmation receipt of the same amount before hurriedly leaving the showroom.
However, when the owner asked the accountant to check the bank balance, they were shocked to learn that the amount was not credited. The phone number used for making the prank payment is also incommunicado.
The imposter had apparently used a fake Unified Payment Interface (UPI) application which generated a fake transaction completed notification of the billing amount.
Based on the complaint registered by the showroom staffer- Nitu Tundawat, an offence under section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for cheating was registered at the Navghar police station against the yet-to-be identified imposter on 26, December.
Apart from conducting mobile surveillance, the investigating team is scanning footage captured by closed circuit tele-vision (CCTV) cameras installed in the showroom and possible getaway routes to ascertain the identity of the accused who is believed to be a serial imposter.
