Mumbai: In a significant boost for Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 1777 crore for the Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP) in the Union Budget 2025-26.

This marks an impressive 125% increase over the previous year’s budget grant of Rs 789 crore, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing suburban rail services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Under MUTP, Mumbai's suburban railway is undergoing significant upgrades, including the addition of 238 AC trains, the construction of new railway lines, and the enhancement of existing infrastructure. This includes a plan to upgrade 16 suburban stations, expand existing lines, and improve connectivity. Apart from that

Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) System is aslo part of MUTP.

Construction of over 300 km of new lines is progressing, including sections between Kurla - Parel, Kalyan- Asangaon, Kalyan-Kasara, and Airoli-Kalwa.

"The Government of Maharashtra will contribute an equal amount, ensuring a total infusion of funds that will accelerate the progress of crucial MUTP projects aimed at easing congestion, improving connectivity, and enhancing passenger convenience" said an official of MRVC.

"Despite the scale of ongoing projects, there was no constraint of funds in the last financial year (2024-25) too, ensuring that MUTP works continued unhindered. Furthermore, as work progresses, additional funds are allocated in the revised grant during the last quarter of the financial year, if required, ensuring smooth execution" further added MRVC official.

Vilas Wadekar, CMD MRVC said “with this robust financial backing, key MUTP projects, including new corridors, station upgrades, and improved rail infrastructure, are progressing well, bringing Mumbai’s commuters closer to a faster, safer, and more efficient suburban railway network.”
