In a statement released on Wednesday, Transport Minister Sarnaik urged goods transporters to call off their ongoing strike, assuring them that the government is taking their concerns seriously and working toward solutions. He emphasized that a high-level committee has already been formed to address the transport sector’s grievances, and that the committee is expected to submit its report within a month.

According to sources, despite the strike by a section of goods transporter, Wednesday saw minimal disruption. Many transport unions offered only moral support while continuing normal operations. The cancellation of the planned school bus strike, which was supposed to start on July 2, further helped in maintaining stability.

Minister Sarnaik noted that school bus operators, who had also planned to go on strike, have now withdrawn their agitation. He appealed to the remaining striking transporters to follow suit, stressing that their cooperation is essential for the public’s welfare and the state’s economy. Sarnaik underlined the vital role that the transport sector plays in driving economic growth and facilitating trade and commerce.

He further mentioned that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that any decisions made by the government will prioritize the interests of transporters. The minister acknowledged several pressing issues raised by the transport community, such as the lack of dedicated parking spaces for private buses, school vans, tankers, and trucks in urban areas like Mumbai. He stated that efforts are ongoing to resolve these problems and enhance infrastructure for better transport operations.

In a bid to de-escalate tensions, Sarnaik announced that all transport check-posts have been shut down and that officials have been instructed not to take any punitive action against transporters. Both the Transport and Police Departments have been advised to handle the situation with caution and cooperation.

Minister of State Yogesh Kadam also echoed Sarnaik’s assurances, focusing on parking concerns in Mumbai.

During a recent meeting between government officials and stakeholders, senior officers presented comprehensive reports addressing the concerns raised by transport unions. Representatives from major associations such as the All India Motor Transport Congress, Mumbai Bus Owners Association, Federation of Tourist Taxi Operators, School Bus Association of Maharashtra, Maharashtra Truck Lorry Owners Association and Maharashtra Heavy Vehicle Interstate Container Association responded positively and pledged their cooperation.

"With these assurances and the creation of an official dialogue platform, the government remains hopeful that the remaining transporters will soon end their strike and resume services" said an official.
