In a bid to give an earning opportunity to women prisoners and make them financially independent in the society once they come out of the jail, the Satara jail administration has started imparting a beauty parlour course for women inmates in association with an NGO. The prison administration will also be providing training in mehendi and rangoli for these inmates.

"A 10-day Beauty Parlor (personal beauty maintenance) course for women prisoners in jails was started on December 02 through Dhyas Foundation in Satara District Jail. "There are 20 female inmates in the Satara jail who are undertrial prisoners. These women are in the age group of 20 to 70 years and are lodged for different crimes such as murder, cheating, robbery, theft and sexual offences. We believe every woman should be independent and once they are out of jail they should be skilled enough to earn their livelihood," said Superintendent Shedge.

"Apart from the beauty parlor course we would also be providing mehendi course and rangoli art course to these women inmates so that they can generate additional income from these skills. Nowadays in big functions, openings and events rangoli artists are called and they are also paid well for their art," he added.
