Maharashtra has reported a slight rise in the daily Covid cases for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, with 3,957 new infections and seven Covid deaths recorded over the last 24 hours, pushing its tally to 79,72,474, with 1,47,922 fatalities till now.
The state has recorded the highest single day fatality recorded since January. Out of the seven fatalities, three patients were from Mumbai and the rest were from the Thane Municipal Corporation (2), Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (1) and the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (1).
Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded a marginal surge in daily cases on Wednesday, with 1,504 new cases and three covid deaths in the last 24 hours, increasing the total count to 11,11,227, with 19,609 fatalities so far.
Dr Gautam Bhansali, consultant physician at Bombay Hospital said, currently, Omicron is the only new variant that is being spread, causing mild infections due to which the elderly are getting more infected. “The fatality rate always increases 2-3 weeks after witnessing a surge in cases. I urge citizens to follow Covid norms strictly and get vaccinated if they are eligible,” he said.
As per the bulletin, 1,444 of the 1,504 fresh cases were asymptomatic, while only 60 symptomatic patients were hospitalised and 18 of them were put on the oxygen support.
Of the total 24,773 hospital beds earmarked for Covid patients in the state, 681 remained occupied and only 70 patients were on the oxygen support.
