Mumbai Rain Update: City To See Light To Moderate Showers This Week, Yellow Alert For August 13 Amid Monsoon Lull

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad under Yellow Alert on August 13, when thunderstorms, lightning with light to moderate rainfall accompanied with gusty winds coming at speed of 30-40 kmph is expected.

Mumbai and its neighbouring districts will continue witnessing light to moderate rains at isolated places this week. The region has been witnessing decreased monsoon activity this month, compared to first two months. With the lull in the rainfall, the water levels at lakes supplying water to Mumbai remains below 90% from two weeks.

However, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad under Yellow Alert on August 13, when thunderstorms, lightning with light to moderate rainfall accompanied with gusty winds coming at speed of 30-40 kmph is expected. 

After heavy downpour towards the end of July, the region is witnessing a lull in monsoon activity. The IMD's outlook for the second half of southwest monsoon 2025 (August- September) has forecasted below-normal to normal rainfall in August, with a revival in September. 

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Forecast

As per local weather forecast for the next 48 hours, the skies in Mumbai city and suburbs will be generally cloudy with possibility of light to moderate rain/thundershowers. The maximum & minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 deg. C. and 25 deg. C.

As of August 9, Mumbai has so far received 49% of its average annual rainfall. The Colaba observatory has recorded 996 mm rainfall so far and Santacruz observatory has recorded 1363 mm rainfall. This is almost 1000 mm less than the rainfall recorded on the same day last year.

Water Levels in Lakes Remain a Concern

With the break in the heavy rainfall activity, the stock in the seven lakes supplying water to has not been able to cross 90% from two weeks. As of Sunday, August 10, the total useful water content in the seven lakes was 89.02%. On Sunday, July 27, the levels were 89.70% and on Sunday, August 3 were 89.09%.

The total capacity of seven lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres.

As of morning of August 10, the stock in seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai is 89.02% i.e 12.88 lakh million litres.

Upper Vaitarna- 83.20%

Middle Vaitarna- 94.47%

Modak Sagar- 97.24%

Bhatsa- 86.71%

Tansa- 97.92%

Tulsi- 85.22%

Vihar- 74.71%
