Palghar: Local Member of Parliament Hemant Savara has called on the Maharashtra government to provide a special financial package for the fisherfolk of Palghar district, stating that the compensation currently offered under government rules is inadequate to address the extent of damage caused by Tuesday night’s unseasonal storm.

Heavy rain and strong winds battered the coastal district, damaging dozens of boats, fishing nets, and equipment, and tearing off the roofs of many homes. After visiting several affected villages, Savara said, “The assistance provided for damaged boats under current government norms is extremely insufficient.”

He revealed that he has already approached Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the state fisheries department, requesting a special relief package similar to the one granted after Cyclone Tauktae hit the Maharashtra coastline in 2021.

Savara also noted that the destruction extended beyond the coastal areas, with significant damage reported to homes and agricultural land in multiple talukas of Palghar district.

According to official sources, nearly 800 houses and around 50 fishing boats were damaged in the storm. A 65-year-old man, Moreshwar Lohar, lost his life after stepping on a live wire in Vedi village while grazing goats.

Earlier in the day, the state government dispatched a team of senior officials to assess the damage and oversee relief efforts in the affected regions.
