Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has ordered an inquiry into financial irregularities at the Government College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Karad. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Dada Patil informed the state assembly, stating, "Action will be taken as per regulations upon receipt of the investigation report."

Providing further details while responding to a legislative query, Patil said, "Dr Faheem Jahangir Sayyed, an assistant professor at the institution, had been granted a home construction advance of Rs 25 lakh. Following his demise while in service, the government, as per its regulations, waived the interest amount of Rs 8.49 lakh on the advance. Additionally, the outstanding principal amount of Rs 9.06 lakh was recovered from his posthumous service benefits."

However, he noted that "the then-principal of the college allegedly demanded a total sum of Rs 17.55 lakh, including both the principal and interest, from Dr Sayyed’s legal heirs through a cheque payment, which was deemed irregular." He further added, "Dr Sayyed’s heirs approached the court, which ruled in their favour, directing the college administration to refund the amount."

Patil further assured, "I will personally look into issues concerning the land under the college’s possession to ensure a proper resolution." The matter was raised in the assembly by Shiv Sena MLA Mahesh Shinde.
