Mumbai: Maharashtra has launched an ambitious public health initiative aimed at transforming rural healthcare through community participation. Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar called for collective efforts to make villages “health-enriched” under the ‘My Village, Healthy Village’ campaign.
The minister emphasized that the initiative should evolve into a mass movement rather than remain a government programme. The focus will be on preventive healthcare, promoting healthy lifestyles, and encouraging behavioral change at the community level, especially in rural areas.
Grampanchayats with Outstanding Performance to Be Recognised as 'Arogya Sampann Gram'
The campaign will see active involvement from local self-government bodies, district and taluka administrations, primary health centres, sub-centres, ASHA workers, and villagers. Grampanchayats that demonstrate outstanding performance will be recognised as “Arogya Sampann Gram” and awarded incentives based on transparent evaluation criteria.
The campaign was formally inaugurated at a divisional workshop held at Smt. Kashibai Navale Medical College. Several senior officials and public representatives attended the event.
Decision to Implement Campaign Taken at Cabinet Meeting on February 1
Minister Abitkar noted that the decision to implement the campaign was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on February 10, 2026. He urged stakeholders to ensure that no citizen is left out of healthcare schemes and to strengthen grassroots health infrastructure.
The state is already providing free healthcare services and implementing major schemes such as Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. The minister stressed the need to expand awareness about these schemes to the last mile.
Highlighting preventive care, Abitkar also mentioned an ongoing vaccination drive targeting nearly 9.84 lakh girls aged 14 to protect them against serious diseases like cancer. He appealed for widespread awareness and participation in the initiative.
Overall, the campaign aims to build a robust, inclusive, and community-driven healthcare system, ensuring a healthier future for rural Maharashtra.
