The Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement Ltd (MARVEL) established in 2024 to use artificial intelligence (AI) in the state police force has been tasked to ensure the effective use of artificial intelligence in government and semi-government offices to keep government information confidential and secure. The MARVEL will ensure confidentiality and safety of the government data.

The state cabinet had approved a high powered committee to establish AI based law enforcement and infrastructure project in government offices with the council of ministers deciding to expand the scope of MARVEL.

“MARVEL will assist in implementing AI technology in various government and semi-government officials to maintain confidentiality of policies and and protecting official data,” confirmed a CMO official.

The high powered panel will be headed by the Chief Secretary and secretaries of departments will decide on the nature of projects to be handled by the new department.

Meanwhile the Maharashtra government on Wednesday signed MoU with Microsoft to speed up AI integration in administration. “Microsoft will partner with the government to establish AI centres in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, enhancing governance through advanced technologies and training,” shared another senior official in the state administration.

While the Mumbai Centre for Geospatial Analytics will will support critical decision-making in governance through satellite imagery analysis, spatial data management and geographic information system-based applications, the Centre for Excellence in Pune will see integration of AI capabilities with existing forensic science infrastructure to enhance criminal investigation processes, forensic data analysis and evidence management.

The third centre at Nagpur will will help strengthen AI-driven solutions for government functions, focusing on enforcement, monitoring, vigilance and innovative governance reforms.
