Mumbai: Mumbai, known for its iconic colonial-era buildings, will soon see a boost in architectural landmarks as the government has introduced a policy to encourage the development of unique structures. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced this initiative in both houses of the legislature on Wednesday, emphasising the government’s role in enhancing Mumbai’s identity and promoting tourism.
Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde's Statement
Shinde stated that globally, many cities are recognised for their distinct urban architecture and landmark buildings. Mumbai, too, has a rich architectural heritage dating back to British rule. Preserving and promoting architectural excellence is crucial for maintaining Mumbai’s historical and cultural significance, he said.
The deputy CM further highlighted that the existing Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) impose certain restrictions on the construction of distinctive buildings in Mumbai. To overcome these limitations and encourage innovative architecture, the government has formulated a new policy.
To facilitate this, amendments will be made to Mumbai’s DCPR under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has been directed to implement modifications, ensuring a regulatory framework that supports the construction of landmark structures. This policy is expected to contribute to Mumbai’s beautification, boost tourism. and strengthen the city’s global identity.
