Mumbai: The government is set to introduce new regulations to impose restrictions on 'reel star' officials and employees. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the House on Wednesday that amendments will be made to the Maharashtra Civil Services Conduct Rules to regulate the social media usage of government employees. He stated that a Government Resolution (GR) on this matter will be issued soon.

About The Issue

MLA Parinay Fuke raised the issue in the Legislative Council through a calling attention motion. He demanded that the excessive or improper use of social media by government officers and employees in recent days must be curbed.

While addressing the issue, Fuke explained, “Government officers post videos or reels on social media, creating the impression that the entire system is being run by that individual. Police officers, inspired by Singham movies, are making reels everywhere. There is a need for strict regulations and restrictions on this.”

The CM announced that new regulations for government officials' social media use will soon be introduced. He explained that the 1979 Maharashtra Civil Services Conduct Rules did not account for social media, as it didn’t exist at the time. However, with officials now joining anti-government groups, posting excessive content, or glorifying their work online, specific rules are necessary.

Fadnavis stressed that while officials should engage with citizens on social media, self-promotion and inappropriate conduct are unacceptable. These new rules will be incorporated into the Civil Services Conduct Rules, and a Government Resolution (GR) will be issued soon.
