Mumbai: The government is planning to launch a state-run app-based transport service, offering auto-rickshaws, taxi and bike rides. The initiative's main objectives are resolving issues related to cab services and creating jobs for the Marathi youth.

While the app is still in the development stage, the final launch will take place after approval from CM Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. A high-level meeting has been scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya to finalise the app’s structure. The proposed names for the app include Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri and Maha-Go.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's Statement

Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said, “The initiative will empower lakhs of youth across Maharashtra and provide a strong alternative to the monopoly of private aggregator companies.”

He said that to further aid the unemployed Marathi youth, Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank has pledged to offer vehicle loans at a concessional 10% interest rate. Additionally, 11% interest subsidy will be offered through institutions like the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Vimukta Jati Corporation, and OBC Corporation, effectively making the loan interest-free.

Sarnaik informed that the app’s operational framework is in its final stage and is being drafted in line with the Centre’s aggregator guidelines. He added that the app is being developed in collaboration with the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology, along with consultations from private technology firms.

Minister Criticises Cab Services For Exploiting Passengers & Drivers

The minister criticised private cab services for exploiting both passengers and drivers, while emphasising that the government app would benefit both parties equally. According to sources, the app-based service will also aim to address the problem of drivers refusing short-distance passengers, especially in Mumbai. Additionally, people will get relief from issues like overcharging and surge pricing
