As part of the state government's 100-day action program, Forest Minister and Palghar District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik conducted an inspection tour by sea on Saturday, covering the Biodiversity Center Jetty in Airoli to the Jetty in Belapur.
During the tour, Minister Naik reviewed mangrove conservation efforts.
“The Biodiversity Center attracts millions of tourists annually, and efforts have been made to improve visitor facilities. The Forest Department has also worked to maintain an environment conducive to flamingos, whose population has grown significantly from a few thousand to approximately 1.5 lakh (150,000),” observed the minister.
During the inspection, the minister instructed forest officials to implement measures for cleaning plastic waste, oil slicks, and untreated wastewater found in the seawater. He also directed discussions with industry, environment, and port authorities to address these concerns.
“Over the past two years, 1,239 hectares of mangrove forests have been added in Maharashtra due to conservation initiatives such as mangrove replantation programs run by the Forest Department. The Coast Guard conducts regular patrols along the creek using advanced equipment to prevent mangrove destruction and ensure the safety of the ecosystem,” informed an official from the Mangroves Department accompanying the minister.
Regarding encroachments on mangrove areas, Minister Naik stated that initial warnings would be issued to those responsible. “If encroachments are not removed despite warnings, strict legal action will be taken,” he said.
Authorities were directed to ensure that the Diwa Jetty remains operational 24/7 for passengers and fishermen. Additionally, it was also announced that a Mangrove Wood Walk will be developed at the Biodiversity Center in Airoli, similar to the one already built in Gorai. “This will allow tourists to experience mangrove forests by walking on wooden bridges built over the area,” said an official from NMMC.
The minister emphasized the need for public participation and awareness in achieving plastic-free cities, pollution-free forests, and clean seas.
