Nagpur: A horrifying incident happened in Nagpur on Sunday evening when an allegedly drunk Army officer smashed his vehicle into a crowd, injuring at least 25 to 30 people before the car overturned and fell into a roadside drain. The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30 pm near Durga Chowk in Nagardhan.

However, Indian Army issued a statement in connection with the matter and claimed that the headline is false and misleading. The Southern Command of the Indian Army took to its official social media account urged establishing facts and avoiding sensationalism.

The Army said in the post, “Drunk Army Officer Rams Car Into 30 People In Nagpur” The headline is false & misleading. • Soldier on leave assaulted by four individuals. • FIR filed by Soldier against four miscreants who attacked him. • Verified by Nagpur Police. The Indian Army urges establishing facts and avoiding sensationalism in reporting of incidents."

The accused, Harshpal Mahadev Waghmare (40), is a serving officer in the Indian Army stationed in Assam. He was reportedly on a four-day leave and visiting Maharashtra when the incident took place, as reported by NDTV.

According to officials, Waghmare was driving towards Hamlapuri when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to intoxication. Eyewitnesses report that the car was being driven recklessly moments before it veered off the road and crashed into multiple pedestrians.

In a matter of seconds, chaos erupted. Dozens of people were struck by the speeding vehicle. The car eventually overturned and fell into a roadside drain. Furious over the incident, a large group of locals pulled Waghmare out of the drain.

Visuals from the scene show him with blood on his face, attempting to move through the angry crowd, who then thrashed him before police intervention.

Police from Ramtek station soon arrived at the spot, arrested Waghmare, and transported him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is underway, as reported.
