Mumbai: Shiv Sena Chief Leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday criticised the Congress and other opposition parties over the continuing Parliament deadlock, accusing them of stalling the House instead of participating in democratic debate. He asserted that the government is prepared to discuss every issue on the floor of Parliament and described the opposition’s demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation as purely political.
Deputy Chief Minister Shinde made these remarks while addressing the media after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The two leaders held discussions for nearly an hour on Maharashtra’s development priorities, governance issues and matters of national importance.
PM Hosts Shiv Sena MPs After Meeting
Shinde was accompanied by Shiv Sena Parliamentary Party Leader Dr. Shrikant Shinde and Members of Parliament Shrirang Barne, Naresh Mhaske, Ravindra Waikar, Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Sanjay Deshmukh, Omraje Nimbalkar, Jyoti Waghmare and Sanjay Dina Patil. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi also hosted tea for MPs who had recently joined Shiv Sena and encouraged them to remain focused on development and public service in their respective constituencies.
Government Ready for Debate; Opposition Choosing Disruption
Speaking on the parliamentary impasse, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said the government has consistently maintained that it is prepared to discuss every issue on the floor of Parliament. Instead of participating in debate, however, the Opposition has chosen to stall proceedings while organising political protests outside the House.
Referring to the recent student agitation at Jantar Mantar, Shinde said the issue had been addressed and the agitation had concluded. Despite this, he alleged that the Congress continued to politicise the matter by staging protests outside the Prime Minister’s residence and demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“Students and youth are the future of the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently taken decisions in their interest and has always maintained dialogue with them. The demand for Amit Shah’s resignation is purely political and has no connection with the welfare of students,” Shinde said.
Questioning the Opposition’s motives, Shinde asked whether the demand stemmed from Amit Shah’s decisive action against Naxalism, the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, and the government’s firm response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
“No one needs to teach patriotism to Home Minister Amit Shah,” he said.
Calling upon the Opposition to end the deadlock, Shinde said Parliament is the constitutional forum for debate, discussion and accountability—not disruption.
“The Opposition must return to Parliament and participate in discussions instead of prolonging the stalemate. Democracy is strengthened through debate inside the House, not through political theatrics outside it,” he said.
He urged all political parties to cooperate in the passage of important legislation and said Parliament should not be held hostage to political considerations. He also said constituency delimitation is an essential democratic exercise to ensure fair and equitable representation for every citizen.
Meeting with Prime Minister Modi
Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on Maharashtra’s key development priorities, major infrastructure projects and issues of national importance. The discussions also reviewed the Centre-State partnership in accelerating Maharashtra’s growth.
Describing the interaction as warm and constructive, Shinde said the Prime Minister reiterated the Union Government’s unwavering commitment to Maharashtra’s continued development and progress.
UBT Must Decide Whether It Has Faith in the Judiciary
Commenting on the ongoing Supreme Court proceedings concerning the Shiv Sena name and symbol dispute, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said the UBT faction must decide whether it has faith in the judicial process.
He noted that during earlier hearings, UBT leaders repeatedly claimed that the Mahayuti government was unconstitutional. However, judicial observations had rejected those claims and affirmed that the government was formed within the constitutional framework.
“They continue to repeat the same arguments despite judicial observations to the contrary,” Shinde said.
He further questioned the continued demand for the disqualification of legislators when the tenure of the previous Assembly has already concluded. Referring to the Assembly elections, Shinde said the people of Maharashtra delivered a decisive mandate by increasing Shiv Sena’s strength from 40 to 60 MLAs.
Reaffirming Shiv Sena’s faith in democratic institutions, Shinde said the party fully respects the judicial process and would refrain from commenting further on the merits of the case since the matter is sub judice.
