Mumbai: Amid heightened cross-border tensions, the Maharashtra State Cyber Department has taken on a critical role as the lead authority for cybersecurity enforcement and cybercrime investigation in the state.

With the aim of preserving digital order and safeguarding public trust, the department has intensified its surveillance of online platforms and social media to curb the spread of misinformation and content that could threaten public safety or national security.

In light of the current geopolitical situation, accurate and timely information regarding developments in border areas is essential. However, the Maharashtra Cyber Department has raised serious concerns over the growing circulation of fake news across various digital platforms.

On May 10, the department issued a public advisory warning that misleading content — especially related to military movements and strategic operations — is being deliberately spread by anti-social elements. According to sources, the Maharashtra cyber deleted five thousand objectionable posts related to Indo-Pak.

“This misinformation not only creates confusion among citizens but also poses a grave risk to national security,” an official statement read. “Unverified and speculative content about retaliatory actions or defence strategies can inflame public sentiment and potentially escalate tensions.”

The department revealed that many such hoax messages and videos are being crafted to exploit the sensitive situation — often to gain followers, incite panic, or manipulate public opinion. In response, the cyber unit has issued several takedown notices and removed numerous misleading posts from social media and messaging platforms.

Citizens have been urged to exercise extreme caution when sharing content related to national security. “Spreading false information, whether knowingly or unknowingly, is a punishable offence under applicable laws,” the department cautioned. It further advised the public to rely solely on official government channels for updates related to defence and national matters.

The department has reiterated that the Government of India issues all national security communications through authorised platforms and press releases. It has encouraged users to avoid forwarding or endorsing unverified messages, images, or videos.

To raise awareness, a video advisory has also been released and attached to the department’s press note. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious or misleading content immediately.
