Mumbai: Maharashtra reported 9 new COVID-19 cases on July 22, according to the state’s Public Health Department. Currently, there are 31 active cases, signaling a decline from the peak observed in May and June.

Of the cases reported, five were in Mumbai, three in the Thane Municipal Corporation area, and one in the Pune Municipal Corporation jurisdiction.

June marked the peak month for COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, with 886 out of 1073 cases reported in Mumbai between January and July 22 occurring during May and June. In July so far, 81 cases have been reported.

Since January 2025, Maharashtra has recorded a total of 2,690 COVID-19 cases, with 2,617 patients recovering. This wave has sadly claimed 42 lives, predominantly among patients with comorbidities. The state has conducted 39,944 COVID-19 tests since the beginning of the year.

At a recent state-level COVID-19 review meeting, officials emphasized the need for ongoing surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) cases.

They mandated that 5% of ILI patients and all SARS patients be tested for COVID-19, with positive samples sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. Public health institutions, government medical colleges, and municipal hospitals have been directed to maintain updated COVID-19 testing and treatment facilities.

The Health Department urges the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to curb the virus's spread.
