Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the formulation of a long-term and environmentally sustainable policy on the immersion of large Ganesh idols made from Plaster of Paris (POP), while ensuring that cultural traditions and religious sentiments are respected.
Presiding over a high-level review meeting held at the Sahyadri Guest House, CM Fadnavis emphasized the importance of celebrating festivals in an eco-friendly manner. “A detailed study should be conducted on the feasibility of immersing large POP idols in the deep sea, and a strong case must be presented before the court based on scientific findings,” he stated.
The meeting also addressed the critical need for maintaining cleanliness along the seashores after immersions. The Chief Minister urged officials to promote the use of eco-friendly materials and natural colors in idol-making to minimize environmental harm.
The state government had previously sought a report from the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission in line with court directives related to POP idol immersions. Commission Chairman Dr. Anil Kakodkar submitted the report, which includes several key recommendations for sustainable festival practices.
During the meeting, Minister Ashish Shelar reiterated that public Ganesh festivals should continue to be celebrated with full respect to tradition, but with modern and environmentally responsible practices. “Larger idols should be immersed through sustainable methods, while smaller idols should be immersed in artificial ponds,” Shelar suggested. He also stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns promoting clay (Shadu) idols and other eco-friendly alternatives.
Dr. Kakodkar, in his address, underscored the environmental damage caused by chemical paints and urged a shift toward natural colors and sustainable materials. “Water pollution from chemical-laden idols is a growing concern. We must promote eco-conscious practices through consistent public outreach,” he said.
