In a chilling reminder of the grisly murder of a 55-year-old woman inside the luggage compartment of a local train near Nallasopara on March 21 this year, a 25-year-old woman was robbed and brutally attacked between Mira Road and Dahisar railway station early on Thursday morning.

25-year-old Aparna Deependra Mehta had boarded the ladies compartment of the Dadar-bound local train from Bhayandar at 4:50 am on Thursday. A resident of Bhayandar, Aparna was headed for Dadar and was alone in the compartment. As the train streamed out of the platform at Mira Road station, an intruder jumped in and tried to snatch Aparna’s chain.

Archana, who was alone in the compartment tried to resist the intruder. Enraged at her resistance, the assailant hit Aparna with a hammer and then deprived her of ornaments before getting off the train as it entered Dahisar station. Left in a pool of blood with head injuries, she was taken to the Centenary Hospital in Kandivali. Her condition is now stable and she has been discharged. The Government Railway Police personnel have recorded the statement of the victim and are scanning the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at Mira Road and Dahisar railway station.

It may be recalled that Panga Janya Andher, a 55-year-old vegetable vendor from Nallasopara, was stabbed to death by an assailant inside the luggage compartment of a Churchgate-bound local train on March 21, 2014. However, even 45 days after Andher’s brutal day light murder, the GRP is clueless. Apart from releasing a rough sketch of the suspect, the investigations have hit a virtual road block.
