Mumbai : The parliamentary board of the NCP met here on Tuesday to discuss its candidate for the upcoming Chandgad assembly bypoll on February 24. While NCP workers have been pressing for Mrs Babasaheb Kupekar’s nomination, his nephew Sangram too has thrown his hat in the ring.
The election has been necessitated following the death last year, of party MLA and former Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, who had represented the constituency for four terms. Kupekar’s wife, Sandhya, is not ready to contest the election and she has recommended nephew Sangram for the seat. But his followers had opposed this and had warned of revolt were Sangram to be fielded. Besides, claim Kupekar loyalists, Sandhya will likely get sympathy votes and other parties may refrain from fielding candidates. But Sangram and his supporters are aggressive about contesting the election. In 1990, Sangram’s father, Bhaiyyasaheb, had revolted against Babasaheb Kupekar, which had resulted in the latter’s defeat.
