Konkan Railway is set to launch a new service that will ferry private cars along with their owners between Mumbai and Goa by train. The pioneering service, designed to reduce travel time and road fatigue, will commence on August 23, just ahead of the Ganeshotsav festivities.

The route will operate between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa, covering the journey in approximately 12 hours—nearly halving the 20–22-hour drive typically required by road.

An Official's Statement

"Each train will carry up to 40 cars, with freight charges around at Rs 7,875 per car each way. The cars will be securely fastened using belts, and handbrakes must be engaged to ensure safety. Importantly, no one will be allowed to remain inside the vehicles during transit" said an official.

"Passengers traveling with their cars will be accommodated in attached passenger coaches. A maximum of three passengers per car will be allowed: two in the air-conditioned 3AC coach and one in the SLR (Seating cum Luggage Rake) coach. Fares are Rs 935 for 3AC class and Ra 190 for 2nd class" he said.

"Trains will depart from Kolad ij the evening reaching Verna by the next morning. Passengers must report by around 2 pm three hours before departure. The train will consist of 20 specially designed wagons, each carrying two cars. However, the service will only operate if at least 16 cars are booked for a trip" he said

Officials say the move aims to offer a safer, faster, and more convenient travel option for holiday-goers, especially during peak travel times like Ganesh Chaturthi.
